Tell me what you REALLY want

On the 22nd of September, NAWO’s SA members were treated to a Quick Bite that had them considering the importance of understanding what they really want or need as well as the needs of the other party when they are negotiating.

Featuring keynote speaker Makarla Cole – Head of Post Office Partnerships & Channel Management, Integrated Customer Channels, Australia Post, as well as Peggy Kalantzis – Manager Speed Services Express Post Performance, Network Processing, Australia Post VIC, and John Stirling – Facility Manager, Adelaide Mail Centre, Letters & Mail Network SA/NT, Australia Post SA, ‘Tell me what you REALLY want‘ was well attended by an enthusiastic audience.

Bettina Venner, Manager Industry Participation, Government of SA, and SA State Committee member provided the following key learnings from each of the speakers:

  • Makarla Cole spoke about her experiences in negotiating with licensee representative groups – the importance of being prepared and not taking matters personally. She discussed circles of control, influence and concern – understanding what you can and can’t control or influence.
  • Peggy shared her experiences in various work and personal settings and how she has influenced culture in the workplace to encourage the spirit of mateship and make the best of opportunities as they present themselves as well as planning for negotiating outcomes.
  • John shared what he learnt from keeping a regular journal. This helped him to identify similar situations and take a step back to assess his response, so that he was able to be more self-aware when people were pushing his buttons, and was able to change his response in similar situations.

Thank you to all involved in making this event such a success.
