Saving the Whales Doesn’t Mean Screwing the Dolphins

Saving the Whales Doesn’t Mean Screwing the Dolphins was the opening line of the IWD Great Debate that Josephine Rahman Product Technical Representative, BlueScope and NAWO QLD State Committee Member, and Kartini Oei Transformation Manager – ANZ, Air BP and Chair of NAWO’s QLD State Committee, had the pleasure of attending as NAWO’s representatives.

And once the laughter had died down, when you think about the analogy, it certainly makes a lot of sense.  NAWO’s vision has always been “A world where women and men can be equally represented and valued at every level”.  And while the fight for gender parity could be interpreted in a threatening way to the male gender, at its heart it really isn’t.

Some of the key takeaway, thought prompters included:

  • Continued progress requires constant agitation
  • Lots of small actions in your own sphere of influence do make a difference.
  • Sharing something is not the same as losing something.
  • Collaboration is a key to things getting done.
  • Achieving equality for women cannot be done by excluding 50% of the population
  • The GDP impact of achieving gender quality has been estimated to be worth more than the entire value of the mining industry.
  • On leaning in – many of us have lent in so much we’re basically horizontal
  • And lastly, given the slow pace of change, do we need to consider doing things different to get a different outcome. Afterall Albert Einstein’s “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results”.

From the NAWO QLD Committee, we wish you a Happy International Women’s Day to all our NAWO (female and male) QLD members.  We look to seeing you at one of our next events.
