On behalf of everyone at NAWO, happy International Women’s Day! The theme for IWD 2017 is ‘be bold for change’. If your organisation is a NAWO Corporate Member, feel proud! Bold action has already been taken towards driving better outcomes for women.
But why is workplace gender diversity and equality important? Empowering women and creating a more gender inclusive world actually benefits everyone. Everyone. Despite the clear benefits of gender equality, the World Economic Forum predicts that globally the gender gap won’t close entirely until 2186. And if you think that Australia is much more advanced when it comes to gender equity, here are a couple of sobering reports:
So, while today is a day to celebrate, it is also time to consider how we can continue to push for change – individually, as organisations and as a society. Check out our fabulous IWD2017 Tool Kit for plenty of bold ideas for helping your organisation to celebrate IWD2017 and beyond!
And following are just a few of the bold actions our members have taken to celebrate IWD2017. Don’t forget to send us details and photos of your organisation’s IWD activities so that we can share them with the NAWO network: Email email@example.com
NAWO’s QLD State Committee has been on the run! Visit the NAWO Blog to read about Kartini, Joesphine and Davina running with pink on their backs and NAWO in their hearts for a great cause and to celebrate IWD: https://www.nawo.org.au/2017/03/07/nawo-on-the-run/
NAWO Gold Member Programmed produced a video to inspire change in children, saying: “It’s the things we say and do that make young girls believe that many great jobs are only for boys. Let’s change our behaviours and inspire girls to choose from a wider range of career opportunities”. View the Programmed approach http://bit.ly/2kFnf1r.
BHP Billiton, another GOLD NAWO Corporate Member celebrated IWD2017 by launching their NAWO Partnership. At the launch, they showcased some of their champions of diversity and highlighted creative approaches being implemented to access female talent from a range of backgrounds to grow amazing leaders.
Brookfield Rail – a Silver NAWO Corporate Member – celebrated International Women’s Day by announcing a reduction in the company’s Gender Pay Gap to 0.6% from 22.9% in five years. This outstanding result was achieved by making bold changes to the organisation’s remuneration policy and review processes. Brookfield Rail is justifiably proud of the work done so far and will continue to strive for a fair and equitable workplace for all employees.
