NAWO’s VIC State Committee kicked off 2017 with a huge turnout for the year’s first event: ‘Career management – doing it YOUR way‘ . Thanks to NAWO VIC State Committee Member, Amy Demediuk (Senior Counsel, CSL Limited) for providing the following summary and key learnings…

CSL was thrilled to host 150 NAWO members (including one stray male who made his way into the pack!) at its Parkville site on 23 February, for a thought-provoking workshop on career management.  Watch the video via this link or below.

Andrea Douglas, CSL

The theme for the event was embracing your career in a manner that is meaningful to you.  Dr. Andrea Douglas, Vice President of R&D Strategy & External Affairs at CSL, kicked off the event with an inspirational walk through of her career journey, sharing some tips she has learned along the way (see below).  Peta Sigley, Chief Knowledge Officer at The Resilience Institute, peppered the event with questions members should consider when thinking about their careers and led a practical exercise in developing your personal brand.  We also heard some secrets for creating a striking LinkedIn profile from Veronica Auld, ‎Account Executive Talent Solutions at LinkedIn.

In summary, Dr. Andrea Douglas’ top career tips are:

  1. It’s not a bad thing to NOT have a plan
  2. Follow your interests
  3. Build on your unique strengths
  4. Create your own opportunities
  5. Find a home where you’ll be appreciated
  6. Look for role models
  7. Get involved
  8. Be flexible and efficient
  9. Find your own balance / sweet spot
  10. Live life to the fullest

Other messages which came through strongly through the session include:

  • Have your own style and be confident in your capabilities
  • Be kind to yourself
  • Be your true self
  • Be open to what others can add to your journey

Event organiser Amy Demediuk, Senior Counsel at CSL and NAWO Victorian State Committee member, said “We are absolutely thrilled with the turnout at today’s event. It has been a wonderful opportunity for women at CSL to connect and share with women in different industries facing similar challenges. The personal branding exercise was a practical and effective tool for women to start put some words around what defines and inspires them.”

Sending out a warm welcome to new Silver member @KelloggCompany from the NAWO network! Such a great company and brand committed supporting women develop their careers and move the dial on gender balance in operations. #inspirationatwork #operations #genderbalance
