One of the strongest shopper trends we have seen accompany the COVID-19 lockdown has been the surge of home improvement and DIY. And the centre of that surge was Bunnings – a leading home improvement and lifestyle retailer.

With over 46,000 team members working across 382 stores in Australia and New Zealand, Bunnings faced a mammoth juggle. The business simultaneously transitioned store support team members to working from home, implemented physical distancing measures within every store to protect the health and safety of all team members and customers, and continued trading through what must have felt like an endless Christmas rush!

So how did the leadership team galvanise to prepare for and take action across a diverse workforce and rapidly changing landscape of restrictions spanning Australia & New Zealand? What elements of the Bunnings culture enabled the business to respond as well as it did? And where to now?

In conversation with NAWO VIC committee member, Kath English, this is your exclusive opportunity to hear Mike Schneider, Managing Director of Bunnings, reflect on his leadership experiences over recent months, Bunnings’ response to the COVID-19 crisis and the ‘new normal’ of the trading landscape.
