Allyship primarily involves gaining insight into the unique aspects of diverse backgrounds and the varied experiences of our colleagues.

We can all enhance our allyship by empathising with others and asking insightful questions to grasp the biases they encounter. Being open to engaging in significant, albeit uncomfortable, conversation is crucial for improving mutual understanding and, consequently, implementing measures to combat discrimination and bias.

Crucially, allyship is not merely theoretical but is evident through tangible actions. It is incumbent upon all of us to demonstrate support on both a professional and personal level by actively endorsing programs and initiatives aimed at fostering an inclusive culture.

So how do we engage the hearts and minds of our leaders in becoming active allies? How do we clear the path for our people to engage in tangible allyship action?

This is the conversation we will have in this Knowledge Share Forum. We’ll be exploring:

  • Shared stories of systems and processes that support and support allyship behaviour
  • The challenges and barriers to effective allyship, including (but not limited to) fear of backlash, overstepping, and genuine uncertainty – ‘Can I really help’ or ‘how do I help without appearing patronising or self proclaiming’
  • Strategies for fostering an environment in which allyship behaviour is the norm rather than the exception

Joining us will be Mike McEvoy, Program Facilitator from OurWatch, a national leader in the primary prevention of violence against women and their children in Australia. Mike is directly involved in working with men and boys in the prevention of violence against women.
